Chapter 13

He wasn’t exactly sure what he’d expected. When he had arrived outside of the decades-old building, he’d almost decided to forget his plan and run back to his extremely fortunate life as Michael Montgomery. But he’d come this far, and Jewel had gone through a lot of trouble to pull all the pieces together for him. His stylist, whom he considered a good friend, even more so now, had handled all the details to make it look legit. She’d fixed it so he’d look like he was just your regular guy, maybe a little down on his luck. A complete opposite prototype of his identity as the sole heir to the Montgomery’s department store fortune.

Now he was inside what was supposed to be his temporary home for a few days, maybe a week. It couldn’t possibly take longer for him to get an in-the-trenches snapshot of the employees Kurt accused him of being so out of touch with. Getting into the guts and operation of Montgomery’s Chicago signature store, Michael imagined, would help provide critical information for him and the board members.

But most of all he wanted to tap into whatever was causing the dreams. They were strange, prophetic snippets of his past mixed with what might be his future. It didn’t take counseling for Michael to figure out what drove him to make such a bold move of stripping away his billionaire persona. Maybe he’d figure out what his subconscious must already know through the process. Surely the visions of his father and grandfather had purpose.

The masquerade of living like this was to ward off anyone’s suspicions. Jewel had gone through a second or third cousin who was a landlord to set Michael up with the place. He’d enlisted her to decorate, too, because Michael had no idea where to get appropriate furniture for the place.

His personal preferences—like his beloved nine-thousand-dollar Jura Giga automatic espresso maker, for example, or his favorite Egyptian cotton bedsheets—would be a dead giveaway he didn’t belong here. And his designer clothes and tailored suits would look completely out of place in the tiny, lone closet in this apartment. It was unlikely anyone would see where he lived, but it helped him stay in character.

Jewel had hand-selected several pairs of lightly worn casual trousers with coordinating shirts and a few sweaters. She said she’d gotten the whole wardrobe, which included a leather bomber jacket, a hat, and winter gloves from someplace called Savers.

He slipped out of the cheap polyester shirt he’d worn that day and threw it on the back of one of the two wooden kitchen chairs in the apartment.

His stomach growled. Well, he’d put in an honest day’s work, hadn’t he? His eyes scanned the apartment. What was he going to do next? How would he
